With Valentine’s Day just a matter of days away, you could say love is in the air and definitely on the mind. Whether you’ve planned way out in advance or are scrambling last minute to find the best gift to show the depth of your love for a friend or significant other, many of us forget the importance of showing love to the person that needs it first and foremost - YOU.  

We must fill our own cup before we can truly give our love to others, and vice versa - we can not genuinely accept love from others if we do not love ourselves first. So often do we find ourselves focusing our attention on ways to show our love for others while putting our own needs on the back burner, and seldom do we question “how can I love myself more” or “what nice things can I do for myself today.”

It’s not selfish to love ourselves. It clears us so that we can love ourselves enough to love other people. We can really help the planet when we come from a space of great love and joy on an individual basis.

Loving yourself is about consistently carrying out actions that feel aligned with your heart, gut, and intuition. If you merely tell yourself that you are working on loving yourself but you’re a workaholic, running on 4 hours of sleep, living off of fast food, etc. - well, let’s just say you’re lying to yourself and sending a totally different message to your heart.

Here are 5 simple steps you can take in order to bring about an abundance of love in your life.

GO TO BED EARLY

Quality sleep is pertinent to feeling good and energized to ensure a day full of positive and successful thoughts, feelings, and actions. Going to bed before 10pm and sleeping 7-9 hours per night is an excellent rule of thumb for a good night’s rest.

MEDITATE

Meditation calms the mind and teaches us to be more present. Can’t sit still and keep the mind quiet? No problem. There are hundreds of thousands of free guided meditations online, and you can even be specific with things you’d like to attract into your life such as love and wealth - or things you’d like to free yourself from, like anxiety and depression.

MOVE OFTEN

You don’t have to pay for a gym membership to move that body. Go for a walk, take a free online yoga class, choose the stairs instead of the elevator. We were not made to live sedentary lives and movement is not only good for your body but it’s great for your mind too!

NOURISH YOUR BODY

Take a second to ask yourself if what you’re about to put in your mouth will help or hinder the healthiness of your body. Eat whole, Organic foods - if it requires advertising to sell, it’s probably not in your best interest to eat it. Try adopting a more plant based diet and cutting back on your animal protein intake. It’s not only better for your body but the environment as well!

CONNECT WITH NATURE

Plan a hiking trip. Try snowshoeing. Spend a day at the lake. Go for a 5 minute walk on your lunch break. Breath in the goodness of fresh air and soak in that Vitamin D! Connecting with our roots, with nature and the great outdoors, does wonders for the mind, body, and soul.
